What is 3D Secure or 3DS?

Simply put, 3DS is the banking industry’s version of two-factor authentication.

What is 3DS: a security protocol for card transactions that verifies the cardholder's identity to reduce fraudulent activities.

How 3DS works: When a customer makes an online purchase using their credit or debit card, their bank sends a unique One-Time Password (OTP) to their registered mobile number or email. The customer must enter this OTP to complete the transaction. This process significantly reduces fraudulent transactions and the chargebacks or disputes associated with them.

How to Enable 3DS for Your Merchant Account

During the onboarding process, we provide new merchants with the option to configure their 3DS settings. The available options are:

  1. Apply 3DS to all transactions
  2. Apply 3DS under specific conditions—this allows you to enable 3DS based on any or all of the following:
    • For bookings made on the same day as the stay
    • When the cardholder’s name does not match the guest’s name
    • For all international transactions
    • For charges above a specified amount
  3. Do not apply 3DS

If a property has already completed onboarding but missed the opportunity to enable the 3DS feature, they can email us at support@kovena.com to request activation.
